It's snowing today in DeKalb IL. When all is said and done, we're supposed to get somewhere between 6 and 11 inches. Yes, I know, my friends in Boston, that that is nothing compared to what you got a few weekends ago, but it's still a pain in the backside.
As a photographer, people often ask me if I go out and take pictures of the snow. NO. No, I do not. I do not like winter. I do not like the snow. In very isolated instances I find that snow can be pretty, but it's usually as part of a beautiful landscape that would be just as beautiful without the snow. It's not the snow that's pretty. It's the scenery it is part of. Overall I do not see the beauty in it that other people do. Part of the reason I dislike winter is I don't like the weather. I do not like to be cold, I don't like snow, I don't like ice, I don't like sleet and I don't like trying to drive or walk in any of it. If someone could invent a way to make the snow only stick to the grass and trees and NOT stick to the roads, sidewalks and parking lots, I might like it better.
The other part of the reason I dislike winter is that everything is so dead-looking. I understand the whole concept of cycles and how nature has to regenerate itself, but it doesn't make it any less unattractive when everything is bare and dead-looking. I much prefer spring and summer, when everything is colorful and alive. I even prefer fall, because you at least have the vibrant colors of the leaves as they change. Autumn in New England is everything it's cracked up to be and I hope to spend many falls to come out there, as I intend to move to the Boston area once I get the rest of my debt paid off. I really love Boston.
So, as the snow continues to fall outside, I will share a handful of photos I have taken that actually involve snow, in a pleasing and aesthetic way.
(Okay, it's not snow, it's ice, but it was snowy the day I took it.)
